Not All Roofers Are Created Equal

When it comes to getting your roof replaced, you may be tempted to go with the company or person with the lowest price, right? Well, remember the saying “You get what you pay for!” Here at New Holland Roofing, we have over 30 years of experience in knowing why you should resist that temptation.

When you receive a quote, make sure the company has insurance; this includes liability insurance and WSIB. If they don’t, you as the homeowner could be on the hook if anything was to happen.

If you have any questions, give them a call; they should return your call promptly and be able to answer any questions you may have. If you have to wait for your call to be returned, what position would you be in if that company had installed your new roof and you were calling because of a leak or necessary repair?

Make sure quality materials are being used, and have them explain to you the process, showing you samples of shingles and other materials. Ask about warranties on products and labour.

Any roofer with a conscience will never suggest putting new shingles overtop of existing shingles to save time and money. This is a lose-lose situation for you because:

1. It adds additional weight to your roof.

2. By not removing the old shingles, the plywood can’t be inspected properly for any water damage or soft spots. These areas need to be replaced before your new shingles are installed.

3. If old shingles are curled, the new shingles going overtop will look all bumpy. The final product will not look professional at all.

4. You are reducing the lifespan of the new shingles going on, because the double layer will not let your roof breathe properly.

5. You may be saving money in dumping cost this time, but you are going to have to pay double for the two layers to be removed next time you do your roof.

Proper installation and knowledge of the products being used are incredibly important. If the installer is not properly trained, this will cost you in the long run, on future repairs. Nailing too high, not using enough nails, will cause shingles to blow off in high winds; this leaves your roof exposed. The improper installation of valleys, flashings, vents and skylights will all cause water damage and possibly a way for rodents to enter your home.

Think of your roof as the first line of defence protecting you and your family from the outside elements. Your roof also protects everything inside your largest financial investment: your home. For peace of mind, it is worth it to have your roof professionally installed right the first time. Here at New Holland Roofing, “We Are the Finishing Touch That Matters.”
